Former Portsmouth, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers player Ernie joined the club in 1993 initially as a player-manager when the club was all but relegated from the Isthmian Premier Division.Ernie spent the following few years re-building a solid foundation for the club and he was rewarded at the end of the 1995/96 season when Basingstoke won the Hampshire Cup at The Dell in a 2-0 win over Waterlooville. The following season saw Stoke repeat the cup winning success, again beating Waterlooville 2-0 at The Dell. They also won promotion back to the Isthmian Premier finishing as Division One runners up.The following year saw Ernie lead Basingstoke to arguably their most successful season ever. As well as finishing eighth in the league, they also reached the second round of the FA Cup, eliminating Wycombe Wanderers in the process. Town were only eliminated in a second round replay at The Camrose on penalties by Northampton Town in a match shown live on Sky Sports.AFC Bournemouth were the visitors to The Camrose the following year after Ernie again led the side to the FA Cup first round. Basingstoke went down 2-1 to a strong Bournemouth side with the winning goal coming from former Chelsea striker Mark Stein. The Hampshire Senior Cup final was also reached for the third time in Ernies stay. However, Basingstoke went down 1-0 to Aldershot Town at The Dell.The 2000/01 season had Basingstoke finish in their highest league position ever, ending the season in third position in the Isthmian premier.2003/04 saw the last season with the Isthmian Premier Division as step two in the non-league pyramid. The sides that finished in the top 13 would qualify for the new Conference South. Basingstoke finished in 14th and were then defeated in a play-off competition for the final remaining places. Ernie Howe and his assistant Pete Peters were on the verge of quitting the club until Hendon declined their place in the new division which saw Stoke qualify as the highest ranked team that did not qualify.Basingstokes first season in the Conference South was a successful one. The side occupied second place at Christmas and finished the season in sixth, just one point from the play-offs.However, the 2005/06 season saw Stoke toying with relegation and in March 2006, with Basingstoke sitting in the relegation zone, the board of directors made the decision to relieve Howe and his assistant Peters of their duties.
