Frank is a former Scotland international left-back who won 32 caps for his country. He even played all of Scotland's games at the 1982 World Cup. He played for Leeds United, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Darlington during his club playing career.He played in two European Cup finals, lifting the trophy once for Nottingham Forest. He also featured in a League Cup final for Forest. Managers he has played under include Brian Clough, Don Revie and even his brother, Leeds United legend Eddie Gray.Frank's son Andrew also played football professionally. He represented Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland, Bradford, Sheffield United, Burnley and Charlton during his career, amongst others. Frank's nephew has also played for Celtic, Reading, Rushden & Diamonds and Oxford United.Frank's managerial career started in the early 90's when he took over as Darlington manager from Brian Little, to whom he was previously assistant. However, he lasted less than one season.He didn't manage again until 2005 when he took over as manager of Farnborough Town. Frank was at the club for one season and he guided them to the Conference South play-offs. He had short stints at Grays Athletic and Woking before becoming Basingstoke Town manager in May 2008.Frank spent almost 4 years at The Camrose. His first season saw the club fighting relegation but 'Stoke ended up finishing 6 points out of the drop zone. Two mid-table finishes resulted from Franks second and third seasons in Hampshire.The 2011/12 season saw Basingstoke make a very promising start, flying high in the Conference South after Gray had assembled a decent group of players. However, the results slowly started to dry up and The Dragons dropped away from the play off picture. A 1-0 defeat away at Sutton in February was the final straw and Frank left the club by mutual consent along with his assistant Gerry Murphy. First team coach Jason Bristow took over charge of the first team.
