The Beginning
The story of Basingstoke Town Football Club begins in 1896, when two existing local sides, Aldworth United and Basingstoke Albion, came together to form a new club representing the town. Football was already being played in the Basingstoke area before the club's formation, but the merger created a more established organisation with ambitions to compete regularly against other clubs in the region.
Basingstoke Town entered the Hampshire League in 1901, becoming part of an organised county competition that would form the foundation of the club's football for many years to come. When the Hampshire League was divided into geographical sections in 1903, Basingstoke were placed in the North Division. The early years were not especially successful, with the club finishing bottom of the division on several occasions as it found its feet in competitive league football.
A significant change came around 1909–10, when the local North Hants Ironworks team merged with Basingstoke Town. The enlarged club soon began to make its mark, and the additional strength helped transform its fortunes. After a period of gradual improvement, Basingstoke Town won the Hampshire League North Division championship in 1911–12 — the club's first recorded league title.
The First World War inevitably disrupted competitive football, but Basingstoke Town returned to league competition afterwards and quickly re-established itself among the stronger sides in the area. In 1919–20, the club won the North Division championship for a second time. By the end of its first quarter-century, Basingstoke Town had therefore progressed from a new club formed through the merger of two local sides into an established force within Hampshire football, laying the foundations for the decades that followed.
