Match Report

Town returned to winning ways, continuing their fine away form, at Hayes Lane on Saturday, recording their first league win since the 19 November victory at Eastbourne. The Dragons condemned Bromley into the bottom three as their dramatic slide down the table continues and Manager Mark Goldberg sees his side record no wins in the last fourteen attempts.

Town were positive from the outset and boss Frank Gray believes that Town must adopt such a game plan if they are to push for a play off place in the second half of the season. The Dragons took to the field minus Ashley Bayes, Shaun McAuley, Delano Sam-Yorke and Adam Mekki, all still side lined through injury but there was good news in that Wes Daly was fit to face his former club and Angus MacDonald was able line up following the extension to his loan period.

Rob Rice, Jay Gasson and MacDonald formed the back three with Nathan Smart returning to the starting eleven and playing as a wing back along with Matt Warner, while Bradley Bubb in his last game for ‘Stoke partnered Tim Sills up front.

Between them the two teams had gone 18 games without a win and this showed in the opening ten minutes as both sides struggled to make progress, with the only notable action being Bubb escaping down the right and his low centre cut out before Sills could get in a shot. However the break through came early, on 12 minutes, a long ball forward from Rice found Sills in behind the home defence and as the initial chance was half cleared, the ball ended up with Sills again and this time he found Warner at the far post who made no mistake and fired home. The visitors did not look back and took a strangle hold on the game, looking comfortable on the ball and passing in a manner that they had done earlier in the season.

The Dragons looked for a second goal as half chances came and went, Sills did well chasing down a clearance from Bromley’s Liam Harwood on the edge of the area but fortunately for the home defender Sills was unable to control and the ball bounced back to him. Smart made a good run forward and elected to go for goal with Sills and Bubb in support. Jidi Ogunbote, who has looked solid since his return to the side, found Warner on 24 minutes and a superb centre was met by Sills and his header went just wide.

Town only had to wait another minute; on 25 a terrible mix up in the home defence saw the visitors double their lead. Warner was again given acres of space and his cross for Bubb never made the striker with Harwood converting it into his own net under extreme pressure. Just before the half hour the home side had a chance as they won a free kick in a dangerous position courtesy of a Stuart Lake foul. Lewis Taylor struck well but straight at Chay Morris. The Dragons won a free kick at the other end, MacDonald did well to flick on and Bubb was unable to reach. The hosts now under pressure were forced into giving away needless free kicks and Sills did well from another seeing his shot blocked.

A rare moment of panic for the visitors came 10 minutes before the break. With Nathan Smart bundled into touch during an attack and off the field receiving treatment the hosts took advantage of the extra man with Hakeem Araba getting in behind the defence, as Morris advanced Araba slipped but regained composure to strike wide. As the half came to an end the Dragons took their foot off the pedal and allowed the home side chances to get back in the game. Following a scramble in the Town box Rice made a timely block from an Araba shot. Three minutes from half time Lewis Taylor fired from distance but Morris made a comfortable save followed by a good low save from the same player who had got in down the right channel.

Half-time: Bromley 0 Basingstoke Town 2

Bromley got the second half under way having made a double substitution at the break. Despite having dominated the opening 45 minutes the visitors won their first corner four minutes into the second half taken by Warner short to Daly and Warner’s cross into the area was palmed away by ‘keeper Lloyd Anderson under pressure and Marlon Patterson clearing ahead of Bubb. A couple of minutes later Bromley made a hash of clearing a through ball and a good challenge was required to prevent Bubb having a scoring opportunity.

It was not Taylor’s afternoon, he had squandered the home sides few decent opportunities in the first half but would rue his miss on the hour. A good cross from Moses Swaibu found the striker 12 yards from goal but he failed to find the target firing well over the bar. Another who had not had a good day at the office, Harwood, nearly gave away another goal, a lack of communication with his ‘keeper and his weak back header almost let in Bubb for town’s third as he failed to see the Town striker lurking behind him.

The visitors still looked the most likely to score and Lake fired a rocket from the edge of the box just wide on 65 minutes. Two minutes later the Dragons made their first substitution with Bubb making way for David Pratt, almost making an impact with his first touch running onto a Sills through ball and firing badly over the bar. Ogunbote was close to converting Smart’s cross and Daly’s strong run at goal was ended by a fine challenge.

Substitute Bradley Goldberg cut inside but Smart did well to see the ball out for a corner which Morris failed to deal with and Freddie Warren fired over the bar. A flurry of action saw Pratt close to converting a flick on from a cross in by Warner. As play moved to the other end Rice got in a good challenge to deny Goldberg a run in on goal. It was Town who scored again, the impressive Sills doing well down the right channel and finding Pratt at the near post who was fouled. Wes Daly stepped up to heap further misery on his old club, converting the spot kick. Town made two late substitutions with Warner and Sills off and Toby Little and Rob Gradwell replacing them.

On the stroke of 90 minutes Town had the ball in the net again with a fine strike from Pratt but the assistant referee adjudged Gradwell to be in an offside position. Late consolation for the home side came in injury time.

Danny Waldren struck a free kick from almost 30 yards that came back off the post, Morris had committed himself to the dive for the free kick and substitute Aaron Rhule was first to react, slotting home the rebound.

An important win for the Dragons ending their five game winless run and securing the three points to keep in touch with their fellow play-off contenders. The games get no easier for the Camrose side with two further road trips in four days starting with Weston –super –Mare on Tuesday. Town will still be depleted for this game against the team just above them in the league, and Saturday the trip to Twerton Park to take on Conference National strugglers Bath City in the last 32 of the FA Trophy.
